Big Box Retailer Thinks Big on Everyday Sustainability, Reducing Energy Use by 78% with the Turntide Smart Motor System

Big Box Retailer, a well-known Canadian retailer with over 50,000 employees and thousands of locations, faced the common big-box HVAC challenges of air movement, indoor air quality (IAQ), and ventilation in large, high-ceiling stores. To meet aggressive sustainability and energy-efficiency goals, the retailer engaged Turntide Technologies to pilot the Turntide Smart Motor System as an intelligent, lower-carbon upgrade for its rooftop unit (RTU) motors.

Turntide Technologies retrofitted two 5HP motors in 2 of 10 RTUs at an Ontario store, installed a Remote Monitoring Kit and Energy Monitoring Kit, and performed measurement and verification. The pilot delivered a 78% annual energy reduction for those motors (44,869 kWh), CA$5.3K (≈$4.4K USD) in yearly utility savings, and 31.8 metric tons of CO2 avoided (plus equivalents such as 3,578 gallons of gas and 39 acres of forest), prompting the retailer to expand Turntide deployments to more than 100 locations.
