Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology (TIO), the national implementing body of the Nepal Eye Program, faced high rates of blindness in remote Nepalese communities where patients often had to travel to Kathmandu for diagnosis and surgery. TIO needed a secure, high-quality video conferencing solution that worked with the Remidio Fundus on Phone retinal imaging device and could perform well over unstable Internet, so they chose TrueConf (video conferencing with TrueConf Server and client apps).

TrueConf was deployed in 2019 across the main hospital and community eye centres, integrating PTZ cameras and Remidio imaging so technicians could share retinal photos and get real-time feedback from Kathmandu; consultations are recorded for easier handovers. The TrueConf solution connected two rural CECs to the capital, dramatically improving access to preliminary diagnoses and remote exams, with clinicians reporting a near-minimal risk of medical error and prompting plans to expand TrueConf Server to other centres.
