IRS-CI shuts down xDedic Marketplace and indicts 19 with TRM Labs

The Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) faced a significant challenge from the xDific Marketplace, a darknet platform where threat actors sold over 700,000 compromised server credentials to commit crimes like large-scale tax fraud. To combat this, IRS-CI partnered with vendor TRM Labs and utilized their TRM Forensics product to investigate the financial crimes and follow the money trail.

TRM Labs provided blockchain intelligence that enabled IRS-CI to trace cryptocurrency transactions, identify real-world subjects, and work with international partners. The solution led to the indictment of 19 individuals, the extradition of criminals from four countries, and the complete seizure and shutdown of the xDific Marketplace. This success also generated leads that resulted in the takedown of the related SSNDOB Marketplace, demonstrating the measurable impact of TRM Labs' tools.
