The FBI faced the challenge of dismantling the long-running Qakbot botnet, a sophisticated malware responsible for infecting millions of computers and facilitating hundreds of millions of dollars in ransomware losses. To address this, they utilized TRM Labs and its TRM Forensics product to trace illicit cryptocurrency flows.

Using TRM Labs' blockchain tracing capabilities, the FBI was able to identify, track, and seize $8.6 million in bitcoin that represented the illicit profits of the Qakbot administrators. This operation, supported by TRM Labs, successfully neutralized the botnet's infrastructure, removed the malware from infected computers, and significantly disrupted a major cyber criminal ecosystem.
