BC Hydro - Customer Case Study

BC Hydro, the third largest electric utility in Canada, needed a way to run its reservoir optimization and simulation models with high performance for only a few hours a week. The company wanted to maintain high security standards while keeping costs low, and its existing on-premises systems and laptops were no longer practical for the newest generation of models. BC Hydro worked with TriNimbus to build the solution on AWS.

TriNimbus implemented a secure, on-demand hybrid environment that kept legacy systems on premises while moving the compute-intensive workloads to AWS. The cluster was isolated in an Amazon VPC, with Amazon EBS encryption and Amazon S3 server-side encryption, and the environment was automated with CloudFormation. The result was a system that could spin up 216 CPUs in 10–15 minutes, deploy data and code in five minutes, run the model in 10 to 12 minutes, and shut down in five to 10 minutes, with each run costing approximately $10.
