A Trimble Case Study
Trimble’s Quantm system was deployed by the Zhejiang Provincial Plan, Design and Research Institute of Communications (ZJIC) on the 150 km Huangqunan Expressway (Huangshan–Nanping via Quzhou) to quickly review, assess and present multiple alignment options. The challenge was to find high-quality alignments that met all planning constraints while reducing construction costs and shortening planning and design time compared with conventional feasibility-study designs.
Using Quantm to generate and compare optimized alignments within 200 m of the original design, ZJIC achieved major savings: bridge length was cut by over 8.5 km, earthwork was reduced by more than 15 million m³, total tunnel length was more than halved, and route length was shortened by over 600 m. The tool also produced additional savings via vertical optimization even when horizontal alignments were fixed, delivering faster planning, lower construction costs and a robust, scientific basis for alignment selection and presentation.
