A Trimble Case Study
York County, South Carolina’s government needed a more efficient way to manage growing infrastructure demands on tight budgets—especially to comply with ISO requirements for 1,500 fire hydrants—while sharing accurate asset information across departments and reducing paper-based workflows. Rapid population growth made up-to-date maps of water, sewer, signs and road features essential for planning, maintenance and emergency response.
The county implemented a mobile GIS solution using Trimble GeoExplorer handhelds with ESRI ArcPad for field data entry, GPS Pathfinder Office for postprocessing, and ArcGIS/ArcIMS for mapping and web sharing. The system eliminated paper records, cut staff time (in some cases reducing three-person tasks to one), enabled a 2,100-stop-sign inventory in three months, improved 911 hydrant routing, and now supports daily utility updates and better development planning.
