Willhite Grading and Excavation Cuts Costs and Improves Safety for Santa Barbara Landslide Repair with Trimble Earthworks Grade Control Platform

Willhite Grading and Excavation, a premier grading and excavation contractor in Central California, needed to eliminate time-consuming, hazardous staking and the dedicated grade checker on projects — including a Santa Barbara landslide repair spanning 125 ft by 70 ft and roughly 2,500 yd³ of material where a 1.5:1 slope had to be rebuilt. The company sought a way to improve excavation productivity, accuracy and jobsite safety.

By equipping Cat 308 excavators with the Trimble Earthworks Grade Control Platform and Spectra Precision lasers, operators gained real-time grade data, automated slope and invert settings, and no longer needed ground men to set rods or move lasers. The team rebuilt the landslide in about 2.5 months with zero staking, cut daily labor hours (saving hundreds of dollars per week), sped up and improved trenching accuracy, raised safety, and can now take on more utility, trenching and fine-grading work for greater profitability.
