Why the town of Brookline chose fleet management to improve productivity and lower costs

The Town of Brookline, MA — a 60,000‑resident municipality — faced unpredictable public works workflows, repeated equipment damage and risky driving after street sweepers and other vehicles returned from routine runs with excessive wear. Fleet Manager Mark Parece traced the problems to a lack of vehicle monitoring and inefficient on‑shift behavior that increased maintenance, fuel use and staffing needs.

Brookline deployed Trimble GeoManager, a cloud-based fleet telematics platform, first on sweepers and then across all public works vehicles. The system delivered real‑time visibility, cut a typical six‑hour task to about 2.5 hours, eliminated one sweeper (and reassigned a worker), reduced maintenance and fuel costs, improved safety and response times, and produced reports to resolve resident complaints — increasing productivity and optimizing the workforce.
