WeedSeeker System Enables Chilean Vineyard to See 50 Percent Savings in Herbicide Costs

Trimble helped Chile’s Santa Carolina vineyard tackle costly and time-consuming shoot growth and weed control at the base of grapevines, where unwanted leaves steal energy from the fruit. Farm manager Jose Diaz needed a more precise, efficient way to remove this foliage across 30 hectares while cutting herbicide use and labor associated with frequent tank refills.

Using Trimble’s WeedSeeker spot-spray system—mounted on a tractor and run in two seasonal passes—the vineyard sprayed only detected foliage rather than bare ground. The sensor-driven application doubled the area covered per tank, delivered about 50% savings in herbicide costs, reduced labor and refill time, and gave the operation greater autonomy; Diaz now plans to purchase units for both tractor and ATV use.
