Case Study: Fugro achieves silent, real-time millimeter-accurate tunnel monitoring with Trimble S9 and TPSDK

A Trimble Case Study

Preview of the Fugro Case Study

Using integrated solutions to monitor tunnel construction under The Hague

Fugro, an international leader in geospatial measurements, was contracted by The Hague to monitor the Rotterdamsebaan tunnel construction and detect any surface or structural movement caused by tunneling beneath a dense urban area. The challenge was to provide continuous, highly accurate monitoring across buildings, parks and ports while minimizing disruption to residents and infrastructure.

Fugro deployed a network of Trimble S9 robotic total stations and target prisms, integrating them with its GeoRiskPortal monitoring software using the Trimble Precision SDK to enable automated, millimeter‑precision, cyclical measurements. The silent MagDrive‑equipped instruments and real‑time analysis let teams model and respond to movements as the TBM advanced, delivering reliable, low‑impact monitoring, expanding Fugro’s instrument options and proving cost‑effective for large‑scale projects.
