United Kingdom’s Largest Metropolitan District Council - Customer Case Study

A large UK metropolitan district council needed to comply with the Traffic Management Act 2004 by undertaking a complete review of waiting and loading restrictions across a 365 km² area. The land survey team faced the challenge of collecting spatially accurate locations and attributes for more than 12,000 signs and road markings—in urban and rural environments—with positional accuracy within one metre and minimal disruption to council operations.

The council partnered with KOREC/Trimble and deployed six GeoXT handhelds with FastMap Mobile, Trimble VRS Now real-time corrections (delivered via mobile phones and Bluetooth) and ESRI ArcMap for daily processing. After brief training and adding temporary field staff, teams surveyed and uploaded data each day, achieving submeter accuracy in the field, significantly reducing post-processing time. Within about a year they captured the required dataset, removed redundant signs, met legislative criteria, and prepared to integrate the data into TrafficFlow for ongoing traffic management.
