A Trimble Case Study
Morgan Sindall, acting as a Crossrail contractor in London, was tasked with linking new tunnels to Network Rail infrastructure along an 860 m stretch of track in Newham. The £100M contract demanded continuous, 24-hour monitoring to detect any rail movement from cut-and-cover construction that could threaten passenger safety or disrupt schedules, so the team needed a robust, reliable and repeatable system that stakeholders could trust.
The team deployed a blended solution using 10 Trimble S8 total stations with Trimble VISION, more than 600 rail-mounted prisms, hundreds of wireless tiltmeters, and Trimble 4D Control software to automate hourly measurement cycles, data storage, alarms (8/15/20 mm thresholds) and reporting. Alerts were routed to a small monitoring team for rapid assessment; the system enabled prompt action (including a track realignment in under 12 hours), daily reports and UCIMS uploads, and delivered the required confidence, safety and stakeholder satisfaction.
