A Trimble Case Study
Atkins was working on the Ostlänken rail project in Linköping, carrying out a route location study and investigating a new station placement. The team faced a complex challenge: comparing many route scenarios with the same geometric and speed requirements while accounting for municipal planning, changing technical needs, and difficult-to-quantify factors like environmental protection, noise, and land acquisition. They used Trimble Quantm to help analyze the options.
Trimble Quantm automated the route optimization process by modeling terrain, ground conditions, constraints, and costs, then ranking many alternatives by cost and CO2 impact. This gave Atkins early, reliable information at the start of the project, making it easier to test scenarios, focus effort where it mattered most, and compare options more fairly across disciplines. The result was a faster, more efficient workflow and better decision-making for the Ostlänken study.
