A Trimble Case Study
Trimble Marine Construction Solutions supported Gulf Dredging on the 220,000 sq. ft. addition to the Scientific Center of Kuwait — a waterfront project in Salmiya that included a seawater aquarium, IMAX and new shore protection requiring seawall renovation, land reclamation and relocation of intake/outfall pipelines in just six months. The contractor had to place armor rock and lay pipelines from a barge-mounted wire crane with sub-centimeter accuracy; conventional methods relied on buoys, divers and daylight, so Gulf Dredging sought a machine-guidance system for visual and documented verification.
Trimble deployed a Trimble 5700 RTK base, HYDROpro with SPS461 on a survey boat, and Trimble Marine Construction software with an MPS865 receiver on the crane (plus proximity and cable sensors) so layered designs could be uploaded and visualized in 3D during placement. The system enabled continuous as-built mapping, increased daily progress by 50–75%, reduced rework and over-dredge, achieved precise seabed pipeline positioning without divers, and improved safety — with plans to expand the Trimble systems across more cranes and vessels.
