Trimble Earthworks Excavator Automatics Functionality Increases Operator Speed and Accuracy

Danish contractor M.J. Eriksson put Trimble Earthworks to the test on the Roskilde Fjordlink highway and bridge project to see if automated grade control could speed up and improve accuracy when shaping a 25 m side slope to a ±3 cm tolerance. The company compared two operators—one very experienced and one beginner/intermediate—working a Cat 329E, measuring 40 control points after each run to verify results.

Using the Trimble Earthworks Grade Control Platform with excavator automatics (operator controls the stick while the system controls boom and bucket), both operators finished faster and more accurately. The experienced operator was 41% faster with a 75% increase in accuracy; the beginner/intermediate operator was 28% faster with a 100% increase in accuracy, demonstrating clear productivity and quality gains across skill levels.
