Trimble Compaction Control Used on the World's Highest High-speed Rail

Trimble worked with LanXin Railway contractor GanQing on the challenging construction of the LanXin Second Railway — a 1,776 km high-speed line with sections up to 3,859 m above sea level that must withstand extreme temperatures, wind and mountainous terrain. The team needed to deliver a high-quality, uniform 22.9 km base layer (LXS-8 to LXS-17) that met strict Ministry of Railways documentation and compaction specifications under difficult environmental conditions.

Using more than 200 Trimble CCS900 compaction control systems (with SPS852 positioning and CM310 stiffness sensors) and on-site training from local dealer SITECH, crews gained real-time CMV mapping, pass counts, layer-thickness monitoring and immediate printed reports. The intelligent compaction workflow caught weak subgrade areas early, improved uniformity, reduced manual testing and material use, increased compaction rates from ~94% to ~99% (a >4% gain), and boosted productivity — results that pleased operators and prompted MOR interest in wider adoption.
