A Trimble Case Study
Stantec, a global design consulting firm, was tasked by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation to plan and assess a new 30 km controlled‑access section of Highway 144 between Chelmsford and Dowling. The project required routing through rugged Northern Ontario terrain while avoiding wetlands, protected habitats, cultural sites and other no‑go zones, so Stantec sought a faster, more thorough way to analyze corridor options and determine preferred alignments.
Using the Trimble Quantm Alignment Planning System, Stantec loaded GIS constraints and project parameters to automatically generate and evaluate hundreds of optimized alignments, grouping them into viable corridors. The approach produced high‑quality routes that met RFP requirements, reduced corridor and route planning time by about 50%, improved cost-and-impact comparisons, and increased confidence in public and MTO presentations.
