A Trimble Case Study
Stanley Robotics, founded in 2015, develops smart, high-density car storage and has built Stan, a fully autonomous outdoor parking and valet robot now operating at Lyon Saint-Exupéry airport and contracted for Gatwick. The team’s challenge was achieving reliable, centimeter-level localization so robots can move vehicles quickly and precisely through narrow aisles and cabins without human drivers, requiring tight fusion of perception algorithms, management software and dependable GNSS.
Stan integrates Trimble’s BX992 dual-antenna enclosure with two AV59 antennas and a BX992 base/Zephyr antenna at drop-off cabins (broadcasting RTK corrections over WiFi), fusing GNSS with LiDAR-based SLAM, cameras and odometry for robust indoor–outdoor transitions and safety monitoring. After testing from 2017 and public launch in 2018, four Stans now manage up to 500 vehicles at Lyon, with plans to expand to 2,000 spaces in 2020 and as many as 6,000, and a 2019 contract to deploy at Gatwick.
