A Trimble Case Study
Southaven, Mississippi’s Utilities Division faced rapid city growth and needed a comprehensive, up-to-date database of its water distribution and sanitary sewer assets — nearly 25,000 valves, meters and manholes — to improve maintenance, response times and customer service. The three-phase data collection effort began in 2012 to address inconsistent records and difficulty locating buried or flooded infrastructure.
Working with local consultant Civil-Link, the city used Trimble R10/R6 GNSS for data capture and a Trimble GeoXH 6000 with TerraSync to build a GIS accessible on smartphones. The precise locations and mobile access let crews find assets within inches, cut time and costs for repairs and maintenance, and share accurate utility data across departments for better operations and emergency response.
