Ref tek's strong motion structural monitoring technology is used on the aswan dams

REF TEK, a division of Trimble, was contracted by the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) to provide a strong-motion structural monitoring network for Egypt’s strategically critical Aswan High and Old Dams. The dams—vital for flood control, irrigation and roughly half of Egypt’s power—required reliable seismic monitoring despite remote locations, limited landlines/internet access and mixed power availability.

REF TEK and local partner NOOR installed ten 130‑SMHR strong‑motion accelerographs (five at each dam), using mains power in the High Dam galleries and solar at remote sites, with GSM telemetry to an Aswan data center equipped with redundant servers and REF TEK acquisition/analysis software. The system delivers real‑time, remotely configurable data and state‑of‑health monitoring, giving NRIAG actionable seismic insight, early warning capability and faster, prioritized inspections to support safer, more cost‑effective dam operations.
