Preserving Cultural Heritage with Digital Technologies

Archeologiniai Projektai, MB was brought in when excavation for a new hotel and office building in Vilnius, Lithuania uncovered the foundation of a historic water treatment station. The team needed a fast, accurate way to document the remains, assess their heritage value, and satisfy the Department of Cultural Heritage before construction could continue, using Trimble scanning and georeferencing tools.

With support from Trimble and distributor GeoNovus, the site was captured with a Trimble X7 3D laser scanner, georeferenced with Trimble Catalyst and DA2, modeled in SketchUp, and visualized on-site with Trimble SiteVision. The workflow produced a detailed 3D point cloud and accurate model in just a few days, impressed the heritage board, and preserved the structure indefinitely in digital form so construction could proceed without delay.
