A Trimble Case Study
Len Corcoran Excavating, a construction contractor in Elginburg, Ontario, faced a complex 10‑acre landfill remediation project requiring replacement of an outdated CKD cap to meet environmental regulations. The job involved uncertain and variable material conditions (dusty, hard and wet CKD, and large rocks), discrepancies between engineering quantities and site reality, and a tight schedule for grading, ditching and capping.
Using Trimble technology—Terramodel for 3D models, SCS900 for site data collection and rover layout, and a GCS900‑equipped dozer—the team converted PDF plans into accurate surface models, verified and corrected quantities on site, and revised ditch designs in hours instead of weeks. The workflow cut layout labor costs by about 80%, removed 18,000 m3 of material (with a cut‑to‑fill of ~20,000 m3 and a 4,000 m3 surplus identified and reused), achieved precise subgrade and capping placement, and kept the project on budget and on schedule.
