Portugal High Speed Rail Reduces Costs by 10%

The Portuguese State Secretary of Transport faced the challenge of planning the Lisbon-to-Madrid high-speed rail project while keeping tunnel and viaduct construction, and overall infrastructure costs, to a minimum. Trimble Planning Solutions was commissioned to provide Trimble Quantm technology to help optimize the rail alignment and support the project’s cost-reduction goals.

Trimble’s Quantm solution analyzed millions of route alternatives and combined environmental, community, cultural, engineering, and cost factors into one study. The result was a better-informed design that reduced the originally preferred investment by more than 300 million euros, or about 10%, and the technology was later used to study four additional high-speed rail corridors in Portugal.
