A Trimble Case Study
Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA), one of North America’s busiest ports, needed to build its first enterprise GIS after acquiring a shortline railroad and discovering disparate legacy records, no dedicated GIS staff, and incomplete asset data. Accurate, current mapping of cranes, rail lines, utilities and other critical infrastructure was essential for everyday operations, security and disaster response.
Working with consultant Environmental Science Services (Es²), Port NOLA deployed Trimble R2 GNSS rovers, Trimble T10 tablets and Esri Collector to field-map assets, digitize legacy records, and publish datasets through a custom web portal. The pilot provided high-precision, cost-effective ground-truthing (for example, rail expansion joints and bridge features), delivered enterprise-wide access to up-to-date GIS data, and led to a follow-on RFP to continue GIS modernization.
