Pipeline Owners Tap GPS, GIS Technology To Help Meet Federal Regulations

Tri-Global Technologies, a provider of GPS/GIS field solutions for pipeline operators across the Americas, helped customers meet new regulatory demands after high-profile pipeline accidents led to the Pipeline Safety Improvement Act of 2002. Operators are required to supply the U.S. Office of Pipeline Safety with spatially accurate pipeline location, condition and metadata for the National Pipeline Mapping System (NPMS), but legacy paper maps and separate condition-testing crews made compliance slow, error-prone and costly.

Tri-Global delivered a customized direct-assessment solution that pairs Radiodetection line locators with Trimble GeoXH rugged GPS handhelds and Tri-Global’s field software to capture subfoot-accurate location and corrosion/coating data in the field. Data is downloaded into a GIS for mapping, analysis and NPMS submission, enabling faster inspections, precise one-foot locational sharing with OneCall systems, easier monitoring of corrosion anomalies, improved regulatory compliance and overall operational efficiency.
