A Trimble Case Study
The Swedish consulting group ÅF faced the challenge of finding the optimal, cost-effective road alignment for a complex 10 km stretch of Road 77, a project constrained by terrain, waterways, cultural heritage sites, and residential properties. Traditionally a time-consuming and manual process, they sought a more efficient method to generate and evaluate numerous alignment alternatives while respecting all environmental and budgetary constraints. To address this, they turned to vendor Trimble and utilized its alignment planning system, Quantm.
Trimble's Quantm solution enabled ÅF to automatically generate and meticulously rate 100 different road alignment alternatives, taking into account all cost elements and restrictions. This process, which took only 10 hours, identified an optimal alignment with a construction cost of SEK 89 million, saving potentially hundreds of millions compared to other options. The tool provided immense time savings, replacing months of manual work, and facilitated better decision-making and consensus with the client, the Swedish Transport Administration, through clear, data-driven visualizations.
