A Trimble Case Study
Veidekke, Norway’s largest construction and civil engineering firm, was contracted to widen and reconstruct the E134 Damåsen–Saggrenda roadway, including about 4.5 km of tunnel. Because GPS signals were unavailable inside the tunnel and the project demanded tighter compaction control and reliable QA documentation, the team needed a new approach to achieve higher accuracy and reduce rework.
Veidekke partnered with Trimble and SITECH to equip a compactor with the Trimble CCS900 system, SPS930 Universal Total Station, MT900 machine target and VisionLink. This marked the world’s first use of a total station–controlled compactor in a tunnel, delivering centimeter‑level positioning (about 1 cm), real‑time CMV feedback to avoid unnecessary passes, streamlined reporting, and measurable time and cost savings — including precise compaction of sensitive glasopor layers.
