Northeastern University Reduced Capital Project Costs and Shortened Schedules

Northeastern University, a large urban research institution in Boston with about 18,600 undergraduates, 11,000 graduate students and a 7 million-square-foot campus, manages roughly 280 capital projects a year ranging from $20,000 to $400 million. The university’s program was hampered by obsolete, spreadsheet-driven processes, minimal document management and a “sneakernet” approval approach that limited transparency and efficiency.

Northeastern implemented e-Builder Enterprise, automating nearly 9,000 business processes annually, integrating Archibus to capture capital requests, and standardizing best practices. The change freed up staff time (repurposing 27 days from reconciliations and 67 days from duplicated payments), improved project delivery transparency, reduced financial risk, and helped facilities save $9.8 million in 2014.
