Mounting Trimble’s mobile mapping system on a boat solved the problem of scanning inaccessible infrastructure

Portcoast Consultant Corporation needed a way to capture accurate data for a full digital twin of Gemalink Port in southern Vietnam, including river-facing infrastructure that was inaccessible from land. To solve this challenge, Portcoast used Trimble surveying tools, including the MX50 mobile mapping system and SX12 scanning total station, to collect complete point-cloud data for the port’s as-built model and BIM applications.

Trimble mounted the MX50 mobile mapping system on a boat to scan hard-to-reach areas from the water, while land data was collected with the SX12 and merged using common control points. Trimble’s software, including Trimble Business Center and Applanix POSPac Mobile Mapping Suite, processed the data into a seamless dataset with 1–2 cm accuracy. The result was a complete 3D digital picture for BIM and simulation workflows, scanned in just 15 minutes on the river side and supporting more efficient operations and maintenance at the port.
