Mobile GIS Solution Streamlines Data Collection for Civil Affairs Efforts in Afghanistan

Bradshaw Consulting Services (a Trimble partner) worked with the U.S. Army’s 96th Civil Affairs Battalion to solve a time-sensitive CENTCOM challenge: replace slow, paper-based field data collection in Afghanistan with a reliable mobile GIS for gathering critical infrastructure and humanitarian information (schools, hospitals, wells, roads) in harsh, remote and sometimes hazardous conditions.

BCS and partners customized ESRI ArcPad and loaded it onto rugged Trimble GeoXT handhelds, integrated laser rangefinding and ArcIMS/ArcSDE servers, and built simple pick-list forms and rapid-update workflows. The solution enabled fast, accurate capture, synchronization and web-based sharing of tactical data, significantly reducing collection and dissemination time, improving soldier safety, and accelerating reconstruction and relief efforts.
