Maldives Airport Expansion and Runway Paving Project Powered by Trimble Office Software and Field Solutions

Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG), a leading Chinese general contractor, was hired to deliver a $440M expansion and land‑reclamation program for Ibrahim Nasir International Airport in the Maldives, including a new 3,800 m runway. The project required mass excavation (four million m3 of sand), precise fine grading and paving, extensive utility and revetment work, and tight night‑time paving windows — all under strict safety, schedule and budget constraints and with multiple subcontractors to coordinate.

BUCG implemented integrated Trimble office and field solutions — including Trimble Business Center, Trimble Connect, VisionLink and Vico Office plus machine systems PCS900, GCS900, CCS900, SPS985 and monitoring tools — to put design models in‑cab, centralize data, enable 4D scheduling and deliver real‑time compaction and fleet data. The result was synchronized, more accurate paving with fewer crew and surveyors, reduced rework and over‑compaction, optimized fuel and machine run‑time, improved safety (keeping staff out of hazardous zones), a projected two‑year ROI on technology investments, and the project remaining on schedule for its 2019 completion.
