Leveling Up Productivity in Digitization of Historical Aerial Images

LGL, the State Office for Geoinformation and Land Development in Baden-Württemberg, needed a faster and more efficient way to digitize and preserve its archive of about 400,000 analog aerial images. Its older scanning process was slow, taking 15 minutes per image and becoming difficult to maintain, making it hard to process the historical photos in a reasonable timeframe.

Trimble helped LGL implement a new workflow using a Phase One camera for capture and Trimble Inpho software for photogrammetric processing. The result was a much more productive digitization process, with LGL now able to digitize about 500 aerial photos per day at 1000 dpi and produce accurate orthophotos and orthomosaics for public purchase and GIS use. Trimble Inpho enabled efficient aerotriangulation, rectification, and stitching, improving both speed and output quality.
