Kutter’s 3D-Enabled Machines Repair Runway/Taxiway Surfaces with Speed and Accuracy

Kutter GmbH & Co. KG, Germany’s largest milling company, was hired to resurface the 3.8 km north runway and associated taxiways at Leipzig/Halle Airport—about 300,000 m² of concrete. The owner required vibration-free removal to protect the cement-treated base and demanded tight elevation control (within 10 mm) so the new concrete could be placed directly on the milled surface.

Kutter deployed Trimble 3D paving technology (PCS900), SPS930 total stations, MT900 machine targets and Trimble Business Center, with SITECH and ex-act survey support, using active prism tracking for real-time machine control. The solution delivered +/-3 mm accuracy across 300,000 m², average output over 7,000 m² per machine per shift, completion in seven weeks, reliable operation in high winds, and eliminated the need for leveling layers—saving time, materials and cost.
