A Trimble Case Study
Kalin Construction was contracted for the earthwork on a six-mile reconstruction of I‑96 in Michigan, a high‑profile MDOT project with a tight deadline and $10,000/day liquidated damages. The scope included removing continuous‑reinforced concrete and asphalt, widening shoulders, undercutting and replacing a 12‑inch sand subbase, and moving large volumes of material in atypically wet conditions while meeting strict final‑grade tolerances.
Kalin deployed Trimble solutions — Terramodel 3D design, SPS880/882 rovers with TSC2 controllers, SPS730/930 total stations, and GCS900 grade control on dozers and motor graders — to cut surveying time, reduce staking and crew size, and provide automatic and indicated blade control. The technology enabled faster, more accurate grading (±1/2" on the sand base), efficient recycling of crushed concrete for drainage aggregate, improved rideability of the new concrete surface, and helped the team stay on schedule.
