JC Balls & Sons Builds Successful Earthworks Business with Trimble Grade Control and Business Center-HCE

JC Balls & Sons, a family-founded earthmoving and plant‑hire business in the East Midlands with over 100 staff and a large fleet, sought a competitive edge to expand into larger civil and construction earthworks (drainage, concrete, bulk excavation). The challenge was to improve site positioning, reduce time spent staking and checking grades, and win bigger contracts while keeping costs and machine downtime low.

The company deployed Trimble GCS900 3D grade control on dozers and excavators plus SPS855 base stations (and BSS), TSC3 field controllers, Trimble Connected Community and Business Center‑HCE for 3D modeling and data sync. The result: 25% less rework, weekly savings of about £1,000 from reduced grade‑checking, faster volume reporting and payments, less travel and machine run time, quicker project delivery (examples include a 600,000 m³ golf course and a 30,000 m³ drainage pond) and increased capacity to bid for and win new work.
