Innovative Surveying for an Innovative Stadium

USI Consultants and Benchmark Land Services (U.S.) and Martin Ruud AS (Norway) handled two demanding surveying projects: the rapid construction of Lucas Oil Stadium, which required setting or resetting about 10,000 control points and extremely tight as-built accuracy for anchor bolts and massive trusses, and the detailed topographic modeling of golf greens at Askim Golf Park to support maintenance and machine-control grading.

Both teams used Trimble integrated surveying solutions—GNSS control, Trimble S6 total stations (including Surface Scan), robotic total stations, and VRS network support—plus careful field methods (multi-set control loops, a custom jig for bolt centers, and pre-placed reflective targets). The result was precise, efficient delivery: base plates fit perfectly on the first try and truss measurements were taken from ground level, while the golf-green scan collected ~1,500 points over 1,000 m2 in about 90 minutes, producing accurate 3D models for planning and machine control.
