Improved Safety and Profits with Trimble Machine Control

Destia Ltd, a leading Finnish motorway contractor with about 1,600 employees, was tasked with reconstructing 10 km of Road 51 into a four‑lane highway under heavy traffic and strict accuracy requirements (15 mm vertical). Highly variable pavement thickness (10–90 cm in spots) and the safety risks of manual surveying made traditional methods impractical and threatened project timelines and costs.

Destia adopted Trimble MX8 mobile spatial imaging for fast, accurate 3D data capture and used Terrasolid/Tekla Civil for modeling, then deployed Trimble GCS900 3D machine control on a Wirtgen milling machine. The integrated workflow reduced field time, produced a detailed model and repair plan in one month, enabled precise 3D milling, met and exceeded surface specs, completed 15,000 m² of milling in a four‑month window at >10 m/min, improved safety, cut material/hauling costs and increased project profitability.
