A Trimble Case Study
The City of Hernando, Mississippi faced persistent problems from outdated and inaccurate as‑built records across a roughly 40‑square‑mile service area—leading to damaged pipes, lengthy searches for valves, costly contractor surveys, and interruptions to water and sewer service. The Public Works Department needed a cost‑effective way to locate and document assets such as water towers, mains, meters and manholes to speed repairs and improve planning.
Hernando worked with Canopy Spatial and a Trimble dealer to build an online GIS using Trimble TerraFlex on TDC600 handhelds, a Trimble R2 GNSS receiver and Trimble Connect. Field crews collected thousands of assets (2,583 meters and 237 manholes in five months), synced cloud data for office access or offline use, and captured photos and detailed attributes—resulting in faster, more accurate locating of infrastructure, quicker repairs with the right equipment on site, improved customer service and better long‑term planning.
