Case Study: LE34 achieves 7mm sub-centimeter rail survey precision with Trimble MX9 mobile mapping system

A Trimble Case Study

Preview of the LE34 Case Study

How a Danish firm used mobile mapping to meet sub-centimeter specifications of a major rail project

LE34, a Danish surveying firm led by engineering survey director Anders Nygaard Møller, faced a high-stakes brief to survey the 70 km Odense–Nyborg rail corridor under tight cost, schedule and safety constraints and an exacting 1 cm precision requirement that had not been achieved previously with mobile mapping.

LE34 mounted a Trimble MX9 (with Applanix POSPac and Trimble Business Center) on a rail maintenance lorry, verified existing dense control in a week, and completed the 70 km run in 4 hours at an optimal 45–50 km/h. Rigorous processing and PPK/INS tuning delivered 7 mm accuracy for all observed points, led the Danish rail authority to approve mobile mapping as a standard method, and produced flexible deliverables for client workflows.
