A Trimble Case Study
Helen Electricity Network Ltd, the third‑largest electricity distributor in Finland serving about 380,000 customers in the Helsinki region, wanted to optimize its distribution network to balance cost, reliability and regulatory outage limits. The challenge was to redesign routes and reserve connections in an urban environment where underground cable reliability, trenching costs and maximum allowed outage times all needed to be weighed against service‑level targets (currently about 30 minutes interruption per customer per year).
Working closely with Trimble Network Optimization and Aalto University, Helen helped develop and pilot an optimizer that uses an advanced routing algorithm and allows the team to input real preconditions (eg. outage-time limits and mandatory reserve links). The tool produced concrete route and cost options, in some cases identifying fewer but cost‑effective connections thanks to reliable underground cables, and Helen estimates the collaboration can yield roughly one million euros in annual savings while improving data‑driven network planning.
