eCognition and Mobile Mapping on the Road in Italy

Sysdeco, a Trimble channel partner in Italy, worked on a mobile mapping project to extract streetscape features from LiDAR data captured with the Trimble MX9. The challenge was to automatically identify road signs, guardrails, and pavement markings from a large point cloud, using Trimble eCognition to turn raw survey data into useful mapping deliverables.

Trimble’s eCognition Developer 10 was used with automated rule sets, masking, rasterization, segmentation, and point cloud classification to process the data and classify the roadway features. The solution achieved 86% feature-extraction accuracy and processed about 50 million points in just 10 minutes, with no manual editing required.
