A Trimble Case Study
EC Electric, a Pacific Northwest electrical contractor, was tasked with the electrical scope and as‑built BIM modeling for the major expansion of Chambers Creek Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant near Seattle. Facing an accelerated schedule and a projected $250K/data‑capture cost (roughly 3,000 manhours) to document existing conditions, the company needed a faster, safer, and more accurate way to capture complete 3D as‑builts for project closeout.
EC Electric deployed the Trimble TX6 3D laser scanner and Trimble RealWorks software to capture and process point‑cloud data, then exported models into Revit. The approach cut field labor from an estimated 3,000 hours to about 300 hours (≈90% savings), reduced on‑site safety risks by avoiding confined‑space work, lowered modeling costs for subsequent packages, and gave the firm a reusable toolset for faster, more accurate BIM deliverables and competitive advantage on future projects.
