Dutch Contractor Fuhler Increases Accuracy, Efficiency on Indoor Excavation Project

Fuhler, a contracting and rental company based in Emmen, Netherlands, was contracted to excavate soil inside the 22‑hectare extension of the Wildlands Adventure Zoo, including work under the roof of Europe’s largest sub‑tropical greenhouse. Their eight excavators already fitted with 3D GPS‑based machine control could not operate indoors because satellite signals were blocked, creating a risk to accuracy and project schedule.

Working with SITECH Nederland, Fuhler switched to a Trimble GCS900 Grade Control System paired with SPS730 Universal Total Stations, using two total stations and prisms on the machines to provide centimeter‑level positioning. The system let operators load digital 3D designs in the cab, eliminated staking, maintained familiar workflows, reduced errors and time on site, and enabled the indoor excavation to be completed on schedule.
