Destia Uses 3D Compaction Control from Trimble to Speed Railway Build for the Finnish Transport Agency

Destia, a Finnish infrastructure and construction contractor, was hired by the Finnish Transport Agency to build 60 km of a second track on the Kokkola–Ylivieska rail line. The project required high-accuracy earthworks and faced two key challenges: time-consuming, costly soil compaction and the difficulty of reliably documenting compaction quality across long stretches of track to ensure a smooth surface.

Destia deployed Trimble’s CCS900 3D Compaction Control System with VisionLink for real-time pass tracking, in-cab color mapping and wireless reporting. A 15 km pilot was completed in about 10 weeks, compaction documentation was produced from the machine without a full-time surveyor, and remote monitoring was enabled. Accuracy tests showed graders achieved 98–99% of readings within ±20 mm and rollers 85–92% (depending on comparison), while excessive rolling was avoided and overall schedule and quality control were significantly improved.
