COWI Makes Use of New Tool to Find Optimal Localization of New Road

COWI was tasked by the Swedish Transport Administration to plan a safer, more accessible alignment for Road 168, which links Marstrand with Kungälv and the E6 and sees heavy summer traffic. Extensive geotechnical and archaeological fieldwork expanded the potential corridor area, creating a need to assess many localization alternatives efficiently and transparently.

COWI adopted Trimble Quantm to automatically analyze terrain, costs, structures, material balances, crossings and environmental/social constraints, generating thousands of 3D-compliant alignments that cluster into preferred corridors. The tool sped up early decision-making, improved stakeholder communication and conflict detection, enabled evaluation of many strategic alternatives, and produced costed, preferred alignments for public consultation—delivering greater control, efficiency and a competitive edge.
