Colorado Contractor Save Four Hours per Day on Two-year Bridge Project

Scott Contracting, a local Colorado contractor working for CDOT, was tasked with removing and rebuilding six bridges and moving more than one million tons of material along two miles of I-25 through Pueblo. Superintendent Corey Jolly needed a reliable payload-management method to track bucket-by-bucket weights, manage three trucking companies moving three different material types (with mixed hourly and per‑ton pay), and keep the two‑year project on schedule.

They outfitted a Volvo EC700 with a Trimble LOADRITE X2350 excavator scale, Material Management System and cellular modem so real‑time weights and haul data are pushed to the cloud. The solution eliminated truck scaling, shaving about two minutes per load (roughly four hours of production saved per day and ~5% more loads), improved weighing accuracy to about 1%, stopped overload fines, simplified payment tracking, and helped fast‑track a ramp phase from 120 to 42 days (saving $500,000 and enabling $1.2M of additional work); Scott expects to finish the job three months early and says the system will pay for itself.
