A Trimble Case Study
The City of Garden Grove, California needed to comply with the new GASB 34 reporting standard by creating and maintaining an accurate inventory of more than 6,000 traffic signs at over 4,000 locations across its 18-square-mile road network. The challenge was to capture high-quality positional and attribute data that integrated seamlessly with the city's existing GIS and included digital photographs for condition documentation.
Using Trimble field technology—GPS Pathfinder Pro XR receivers with TerraSync on handhelds and digital cameras—two-person teams collected sign locations, attributes and photos, while GPS Pathfinder Office provided a tailored data dictionary, mission planning and quality-control processing. The approach cut field time from 27 to 10 weeks, produced GIS-ready, verifiable data, ensured GASB 34 compliance and delivered ongoing benefits in asset management, maintenance planning, interdepartmental coordination and public safety.
