City of Edmonton - A Growing City Needed A PMIS to Get to the Next Level

The City of Edmonton, facing nearly 12% growth and approaching one million residents, launched a strategic expansion of its Light Rail Transit (LRT) to deliver more than $4 billion in public infrastructure. With provincial and federal funding streams, the program outgrew paper-based processes and disparate spreadsheets—Google Sheets proved inconsistent—creating a pressing need for standardized, transparent project and spend management.

In March 2018 the city rolled out e-Builder Enterprise across the organization, supported by branch facilitators, a monthly super-user group, and mandatory three-day training for project managers. The PMIS centralized dashboards and action histories, enabled program-wide cost tracking and forecasting across multiple funding sources, and improved efficiency, accountability and near real-time visibility—helping Edmonton manage its multi‑billion-dollar LRT program and meet funding timelines.
