Chilkat Surveying - Customer Case Study

Chilkat Surveying, a one-person surveying firm led by owner Joshua Ivaniszek, was contracted to perform construction layout for two new cruise ship docks at the Port of Juneau. Facing tight timelines, extreme Alaskan winters and the impossibility of setting permanent stakes on the seabed, the project required accurately locating roughly 200 piles and meeting a 2.5‑inch tolerance so prefabricated structures would fit.

Ivaniszek used Trimble equipment (S6 robotic total station, SX10 scanner, TSC3 controller) and Trimble Access software to take prism-less measurements, monitor pile and drill trajectories, and remotely guide crews when weather or darkness prevented direct observation. The robotic workflows and scanning allowed him to work largely solo, complete the south dock on schedule for the summer season, finish the north dock and deliver accurate as‑built surveys while expanding his company’s capabilities.
